September's Featured Charity

September's Featured Charity 29 August 2014

Our special charity this month is Jeans for Genes who hold their annual fundraising event on Friday 19th September.

Jeans for Genes raises money for Genetic Disorders UK and aims to change the world for children with genetic disorders.

Individually, genetic disorders are rare but together they affect 1 in 25 children born in the UK - that's more than 30,000 babies each year. Their associated health problems mean that genetic disorders are the biggest cause of death of children aged 14 years and under.

The idea of Jeans for Genes Day originated in Dorset in the early 1990s. Two local brothers inspired a fundraising day that's now one of the best known - and loved - charity events in the UK.

The brothers had chronic granulomatus disorder (CGD), a life-threatening genetic disorder which affects the body's immune system.

The boys' family knew that The Chronic Granulomatous Disorder Society wanted to support and care for children with the condition.

So they started fundraising for the charity with an 'auction of promises' in their local area which raised £7,000.

Inspired by this initial success, the family came up with the idea of Jeans for Genes Day.

Jeans for Genes Day is now a national UK campaign which raises money to change the world for children with all types of genetic disorders, not just those with CGD.

How donating your cartridges and mobiles helps - Jeans for Genes Day provides funding for the care and support of children with genetic disorders through their grant programme. Each year they offer funding to a range of charities, please visit www.jeansforgenesday.org and www.geneticdisordersuk.org/grantprogramme to find out more.
